I know that this isn’t the Jays, but it is still news in the MLB so i decided I’d touch on it. Sunday night, in the first inning, to Cole Hamels hit Bryce Harper in the back with a 90 some MPH. Harper took his base, got to third on a single and then stole home on a pickoff attempt at first.
It was after the game when things got interesting. Hamels, who was also hit by the Nats in the first inning, openly stated that he hit Harper intentionally. Most people new this would cause a suspension and the MLB doled out a 5 game punishment (with an undisclosed fine) to Cole. On monday, Rizzo, the Nats GM made this statement to the washinton post. “I’ve never seen a more classless, gutless [expletive] act in my 30 years in baseball, Cole Hamels says he’s old school? He’s the polar opposite of old school. He’s fake tough. He thinks he’s going to intimidate us after hitting our 19-year-old rookie who’s eight games into the big leagues? He doesn’t know who he’s dealing with.” Then, today, the MLB announced that they were fining Rizzo for this statement.
Bias as i may be, as a Nats fan, but i think that this is crazy. Cole Hamels went out and decided to hit Harper, with no warning, and for hardly any reason, and the only real punishment he gets is a fine. Sure, he is suspended five games, but the only difference that makes for him is to move back a start by one day! I think that what Cole did was innapropriate and stupid, and that the MLB should take a bigger stance on this then a 1 day delay to Hamels’ next start. Also, I don’t see why the Nats GM was fined. Sure, he stuck his nose into the leugues business like he’s not supposed to do, but everything he said made sense and was reasonable, the oppisite of hitting someone you have neverr faced before with a first pievtch fastball.
The Jays start at 10 today in oakland, more to come on that soon.
Yesterday evening, during Yankees bating pratice, Mariano Rivera was feilding during batting practice to stay fit, when he collapsed going for a ball. All though originally reported as a torn ACL, the Yankees now say on their website that it is a ‘right knee injury”. Although may people say that this is likely the end of his career, Mo seems to think otherwise. Rivera explained that he does not want it to end like this, and even if this is the end of the season, he will be back in 2013.
In Jays news, Morrow obtained a shutout yesterday against the Angels, to complete a 5-0 win. Play in game 2 has just begun. The Jays are now 15-11.
It has been a long, long time since i have last posted and a lot has happened, sorry for the delay, but posts will get back to regular now.
After an interesting 12-10 start, including a four game sweep of Kansas and getting swept by Baltimore, the jays are facing Yu Darvish and the Rangers right now. The score is 4-1 in the top of 7 (updates to come).
One thing is clear for the Jays this year, if they want to do well, they have to be able to beat the weaker teams that they have done well against in the past. Giving up easy games ay very well be the teams dowfall this year.
In other MLB news, 19 year old Bryce Harper has started his play for the Nationals. In his first game, he got a double and a sac fly. Washington is hoping the 1st overall draft pick in 2010 will pay off.
***FINAL: 4-1 Texas. W: Darvish (4-0) L: Drabek (2-2) SV: Nathan (6)***
After giving up 6 runs n the first 3 innings the jays would slowly come back inning by inning. However, The 5 runs scored were not enough to top the Rays.
The Jays are against Tampa tonight as well before the Astros come to town tommorow.
The Jays game in Detroit was rained out yesterday as well as three other games across the MLB. The Makeup date is set for June 27th.
Also, hall of famer and Twins legend Harmon Killebrew died yesterday morning of cancer. He was 74.
Tonight the jays play Tampa and can hopefully extend that win streak to 7. GO JAYS!
It’s been awhile but I’ve finnaly decided to start posting again. It’s been an up and down year so far for the Jays, right now they are tied for third with boston, both teams having a 20-20 average.
The best average in the game right now is the Cleveland Indians at .649 but a lot can change before October comes calling.
Jose Bautista has the most home runs so far even with his neck injury putting him out for a series. If that stands the management may well have gotten their 6.5 billion a year worth.
At the moment the Jays are down 1-0 to the Tigers in the 7th but hopefully they can still win that.
